The Meadows Inn – Making memories since 1847
Explore New Bern – There is so much to do in and around New Bern! Here are some ideas:
Day 1 – Tryon Palace
Enjoy a relaxing, fresh, seasonal breakfast at the Meadows Inn. You’ll want to fuel up for the adventures ahead.
Next up – Tryon Palace! New Bern was the original capital of North Carolina. The British Governor Tryon built the Palace between 1767 and 1770. It served as his residence and headquarters. Here, you can immerse yourself in the beginnings of North Carolina. Tryon Palace offers guided tours, live re-enactments, and engaging conversations with costumed interpreters that bring history to life at the Governor’s Palace, Gardens, and Historic Homes.

Additionally, the North Carolina History Center offers many exhibits.
Local Tip: Depending on your interests, you could easily spend an entire day at Tryon Palace.
Lunch Suggestion: Lawson’s on the Creek is conveniently situated within the North Carolina History Center, serving up generous sandwiches and salads. The Reuben is one of my favorites, and the potato salad is delicious!
If you feel like you’ve had your fill of history for the day, take a stroll along the Riverfront or enjoy a riverboat tour. The sunset over the Trent River is breathtaking!

For some evening excitement, consider trying axe-throwing at Beary the Hatchet. You’ll receive guidance from one of their skilled AXEperts. Plus, there’s a complete game room! It’s a blast!
The New Bern Civic Theatre is also a wonderful way to spend an evening.
After working up an appetite, be sure to check out one of our fantastic downtown restaurants. The Chelsea and Morgan’s are two of the Meadows Inn guest’s favorites!
Day 2 – Explore New Bern
Begin your morning with a hearty breakfast at the Meadows Inn. After that, either take the Trolley Tour or check out the Farmer’s Market. The Farmer’s Market operates on Saturdays from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm and offers more than just fresh seasonal produce. You’ll find local artisans, crafts, coffee, sweets, and much more. The potter who creates our unique Meadows Inn coffee mugs is present there.
Don’t miss the Historic Trolley Tour, a thorough 90-minute trolley ride through historic downtown New Bern with knowledgeable guides. The guides will entertain you with intriguing details, historical accounts, and true stories from this former royal capital of North Carolina.
Local Tip: The Trolley Tour is an excellent way to view the historic landmarks in New Bern.
Lunch Recommendation: If you’re in the mood for a laid-back lunch, swing by the Cow Café or Bella’s. Both spots are perfect for a quick, light meal. If you prefer something more filling, consider Cypress Hall or Persimmons Waterfront Restaurant. Persimmons is located on the Neuse River, and if you visit Cypress Hall, make sure to try a “Strawberry Blonde.” It’s delicious!
After a relaxing lunch, take a stroll around downtown and explore some of our local shops and attractions. Don’t forget to take a peek into the Issac Taylor Gardens. Or enjoy a walking tour. Bear Feet Street Tours has a walking tour with an exceptionally knowledgeable guide. If you prefer a self-guided tour, ask for maps and information at the Meadows Inn when you check in.
Local Tip: Do NOT overlook Mitchell Hardware. I assure you it’s worth the visit! If shopping isn’t your “thing,” consider visiting the New Bern Fireman’s Museum – it’s more than fire equipment, it’s rich with history, stories, photographs, and more.
After a quick stop at the Inn to refresh for the evening’s activity, select one of New Bern’s wonderful restaurants for dinner. New Bern has some of the finest dining you will find anywhere!
Outdoor Play
If the outdoors is calling you, there is plenty to do in New Bern.
Hike the Croatan National Forest The forest covers 159,885 acres of coastal land bordered on three sides by the Neuse River, the Bogue Sound, and the White Oak River.
Or perhaps, the water that is calling you. Explore the river in a kayak.
The Meadows Inn team is always here to answer questions and provide guidance.
