A Bookcase, A Hidden Door, A Chalkboard, and Our Guests

Chalkboard with messages on door panel

Sometimes the best things happen by accident — like our dining room bulletin board!

Originally, there was a bookcase standing tall against the wall in that room. We decided it didn’t quite belong anymore and had it removed. Surprise! Behind it was an old doorway we never knew existed. Apparently, it was closed up when central air was added — probably around 1980 when the house became a Bed & Breakfast.

Now, we had a bit of a pickle. Do we pull out the old trim and patch up the plaster? That sounded like a dusty mess. Then a light bulb went off: why not turn it into something useful and fun?

A little chalkboard paint later, we had ourselves a charming bulletin board! We planned to use it for breakfast menus, fun New Bern facts, and weather updates.

But you — our lovely guests — had an even better idea.

Instead of just reading it, you started writing on it! Sweet notes, travel memories, little doodles, and kind words about your stay. It’s turned into something so special, we hesitated to erase it.

We were going to start fresh with the new year… but it’s hard to part with all those heartfelt messages. Still, it’s time for a fresh start and more memories. So we took a photo to preserve the moment and made room for new stories to be written.

Next time you’re here, grab a piece of chalk, we’d love to see what you add!
